There was a story I carried for years without ever questioning whether it was actually true.
It sounded like this: You are too much. You want too much. People like you don't get to have that.
I couldn't tell you exactly when I first heard it. Maybe it arrived wrapped in a well-meaning comment from someone who loved me. Maybe it seeped in slowly through a hundred small moments of being told to be quieter, smaller, easier. Maybe (and this is the part that took the longest to admit) I started repeating it to myself so fluently that I forgot I had learned it from somewhere else.
What I know is this: by the time I was in my thirties, that story was running my life.
It showed up in my relationships. In the opportunities I talked myself out of before I even tried. In the way I would feel a flicker of something exciting, a dream, an idea, a longing, and immediately stamp it out before anyone else could.
I was protecting myself from a disappointment I had decided was inevitable.
When the Body Keeps the Score
Here is what no one tells you about an old story: it doesn't just live in your mind. It lives in your body.
That particular story of mine sat in my chest. A low, constant tightness like bracing for impact that never came but never quite left either. Massage helped for a day. Yoga helped while I was on the mat. Talking about it in therapy helped me understand it, trace it, name it beautifully.
But it kept coming back.
Because understanding a story and releasing a story are two completely different things.
What EFT Actually Does
EFT works at the intersection of the cognitive and the somatic. The story your mind tells and the place your body holds it.
By tapping on specific meridian points while voicing the feeling or belief you are working with, you send a calming signal to the amygdala, the brain's threat-response centre, while keeping the difficult emotion present enough to actually process it. You are not bypassing the feeling. You are moving through it with your nervous system on your side rather than working against you.
For those who have already done the inner work, who have sat in therapy, breathed through yoga, stretched out on a massage table, journalled until their hands ached, EFT often becomes the missing piece. The bridge between knowing and feeling free.
It is not magic. It is neuroscience with a human heart. And it does not always work until it does. But when it does, it can change everything.
The First Time I Tried EFT (And the Second, and the Third)
I want to tell you something that might surprise you, given that I am now an accredited EFT practitioner who sees this technique change people's lives every week.
The first time I tried EFT, I thought it didn't work.
I found it on YouTube, followed along dutifully, tapped all the points, said all the words. Nothing. So I tried again. Still nothing. Then EFT came up in a training I was taking and I experienced it in group sessions. I understood intellectually exactly how it worked. And still, nothing shifted for me.
I booked a one-to-one session with a practitioner in the course to give it a proper chance. I walked away thinking: what is everyone talking about? I genuinely wrote it off. I had given it every reasonable opportunity and reached what felt like a very sensible conclusion. EFT simply did not work for me.
I was wrong. But I also wasn't.
What I Discovered Later
Here is what I eventually understood: EFT is as much about connection as it is about technique.
It wasn't that the process was broken. It was that I hadn't yet found the right way in. The right person. The right quality of being truly seen.
When I finally experienced EFT with someone who could genuinely hold space for me, who could be present with my emotions rather than just directing the session, who helped me connect the dots, everything I had written off as underwhelm dissolved. The tapping became more than a sequence of points. It became a doorway.
And standing in that doorway, I finally heard how old that story was. How borrowed. How completely and utterly not mine.
My chest, which had been bracing for years, let out a breath I didn't know it had been holding.
That was the moment. Not the first session, not the YouTube video, not the group training. The moment I was met by someone who could truly see me.
The Story I Tell Now
I did not rewrite my story in one session. I want to be clear about that, because anyone who tells you healing is a straight line is selling you something.
But that shift cracked something open. And what came through the crack was this:
What if I was never too much? What if I was exactly, precisely, the right amount, and the world just needed to catch up?
That is the story I live inside now. Not perfectly, not every day, but enough that I can feel the difference between borrowed fear and my own truth.
And that difference is everything.
